Teens with cancer dance the night away at Friends of Scott Foundation’s 13th Annual Unforgettable Prom’
The 2019 Friends of Scott Unforgettable Prom enjoyed a beautiful new venue in Liberty Station, which lent itself to one of the best Red Carpet experiences ever. Approximately 200 teen patients from the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, their siblings, and guests, disembarked from luxury limousines provided by Emerald Limos and Batta Fulkerson Law Firm. After being announced by glamorous hostess Mackenzie Maynard from Channel ABC 10 news to the cheers of fans, family, volunteers, and staff, the prom attendees sashayed or strutted their way down the Red Carpet and into a truly Unforgettable Night. This year’s theme was perfect—Avengers #AgeofHeroes, a fitting hashtag for these young people who are heroes, themselves.
The décor was straight up “Marvel-ous.” The music was pumping and the dance floor was never empty from the first to the very last song. Delectable treats and food lined the spacious room and prom-goers especially enjoyed the chocolate fountain, the candy table and bonding with other kids facing their same challenges. In addition to dancing, the attendees enjoyed a photo booth, the Pop Noggin station, and a caricature booth. There was a magician who kept the kids in thrall with his great magic tricks.
As with any prom, one of the highlights of the evening was announcing the Royal Court: Prince Nick Herrmann, Princess Nallely Hernandez, King Mason Tone Simpson, and Queen Hellen Antonio Rodriguez. When asked how he was feeling, the Prom King Mason said, “I am just so happy. Thank you!” Prom Queen Hellen stated, “Last year was so hard. This year has been amazing. And this dance makes me feel like I am coming back to life!”
There was so much joy and laughter, while with swag bags and mini donuts in hand, the revelers made their ways back into their limos to whisk them off after a truly enchanting night. The Friends of Scott Unforgettable Prom is more than just a fun night out; the patients who look forward to this evening, who dance the night away seemingly without a care in the world. Each one of these cancer/sickle cell patients has a story filled with courage and grace and hardship and triumph and tragedy and laughter and tears and everything in between, including periods of soul-crushing boredom and some lonely painful times. But, on this magnificent night, they can set all of that aside and are surrounded by glitz, glam, and a whole lot of love.
This night brings with it the best memories; memories that are treasured for a lifetime; memories that can sustain kids through some very tough times, and comfort family members forever, which is powerful and miraculous itself. All of this is possible only through tremendous commitment, love and very hard work by The Friends of Scott staff and volunteers. The Unforgettable Prom is possible only because of generous donations by this community, and everyone involved is so grateful for the support. Plans are already underway for the 2020 Friends of Scott Unforgettable Prom.
