A motorcyclist was trapped under an SUV on Sunday, March 25, after a teen learning how to drive the vehicle turned left in front of the oncoming bike in Del Mar, a sheriff’s corporal said.

The crash happened shortly before 6:50 p.m. at the intersection of Camino Del Mar and La Amatista Road, Cpl. Brenda Sipley said in a news release issued late March 25.

The teen, who had a provisional instruction permit, was driving a Ford Escape south on Camino Del Mar, with her grandmother in the front seat.

The girl turned left onto La Amatista Road, directly in the path of an 18-year-old motorcyclist headed north on Camino Del Mar.

“The Ford Escape violated the motorcycle’s right of way,” Sipley said.

The motorcyclist ended up underneath the SUV.

He was taken to a hospital trauma unit with multiple injuries that Sipley said were not life-threatening.

Sipley asked witnesses to the collision to contact her at the Sheriff’s North Coastal Station. The main line to the station is (760) 966-3500.
