SDUHSD honors longtime student board member Isaac Gelman
The San Dieguito Union High School District honored its longest-serving student representative Isaac Gelman at his last board meeting on June 7.
Isaac, a graduating senior from Torrey Pines High School, has served as a student member of the board for an “unprecedented” three years. Typically student representatives rotate out frequently.
“Isaac is special in a number of ways,” said departing Superintendent Eric Dill, noting his “confidence and independent spirit” set an example for other student board members that followed. “He’s brought on more student conversation (in board meetings) than we’ve ever had before.”
During his final student report, Isaac said that the best experience of his high school career actually came in the closing months of his senior year: although he had never even been to a Torrey Pines Players theater production, he decided to try out for the spring play and earned a role in “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” He said he was fortunate to get the full “Marinee Payne experience,” working with the inspirational theater teacher who has been at Torrey Pines for over 27 years. Trustee Joyce Dalessandro remarked that Isaac was a standout in the play.
“This has been an incredible ride,” said Isaac, who will attend University of Southern California in the fall. “I’m really proud of this district and the administration team.”
