Road Runner Sports has found its “perfect fit,” settling into a new store on Solana Beach’s Highway 101.
The running shoe store’s opening was a sprint—quickly moving into the space vacated by the Trek Bicycle Superstore and opening up on July 1. The Trek store stayed in Solana Beach, just moving up the street on North Rios Avenue.
“It’s an opportunity that popped up and we got everything going within four to six weeks,” said Teresa Iott, district manager. “We’re really excited to be in town.”
The newest store is close to Road Runner’s roots—the company was founded in 1983 by Chief Runner Michael Gotfredson, selling shoes out of his Del Mar garage and advertising in the back of Runner’s World magazine. Road Runner now has its main San Diego store and distribution center in the Kearny Mesa area and 39 stores nationwide, including a store in Carlsbad.
The Solana Beach store is a much smaller footprint than both San Diego stores but as Iott said, the location was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up, “We really wanted to be able to serve our customers in this area,” said Iott.
Road Runner specializes in the “perfect fit promise” working with customers to find the ideal shoe using a 3D scan of the foot and a treadmill analysis. The store’s shoe specialists can put all the data together to find that perfect fit, including the production of customized insoles.
The store offers a wide selection of running and walking shoes, shoes for cross training and 24-7 shoes, lifestyle athletic shoes that look good for any occasion and perform well for any exercise, “At the gym or in jeans,” Iott said.
The store will also feature socks, nutrition, injury prevention and recovery tools and a limited amount of clothing, mostly Road Runner’s R-Gear brand and some from Brooks—however, anything can be ordered to the store.
Iott said Road Runner is also looking to expand its shoe and gear offerings to the entire active community, not just runners, especially with the growing popularity of group fitness.
Road Runner will tap into group fitness with frequent Shoes and Brews group runs from the store and partnering with other local groups such as the upcoming trail run with Dirt Devil Racing Series and Hoka One One on Saturday, Aug. 25.
“This is amazing area to run in,” Iott said, noting the proximity to the beach and numerous running trails. Since moving in, she has been thrilled to see the steady stream of runners coasting along Highway 101, many stopping mid-run to discover that Road Runner is now in town.
“The biggest thing for us is the customer experience, keeping the community feel and serving the community,” Iott said. “I know we seem like a big company but this is where our roots are, we’re from San Diego, we’re from this area and we want to provide that unique experience for each customer.”
The store will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with raffles every hour, vendor demos, food, free goodie bags with product samples and freebies for the first 40 people.
