A man was killed Monday evening, June 4, when he walked in front of a northbound Coaster train in Solana Beach and was struck, a sheriff’s official said.

The pedestrian was hit on the tracks about a half mile north of the Solana Beach Transit Center around 7:20 p.m. The train was traveling about 40 mph, said sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Campbell.

The train engineer put the train in emergency braking, but was unable to avoid striking the man, Campbell said. The man died before he could be taken to a hospital.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Sheriff’s Department (858) 565-5200.
