Torrey Pines hoops wins league championship, streaking into playoffs

The Torrey Pines High School boys basketball team clinched the Avocado West League Championship on Friday, Feb. 9 with a 73-54 win over Carlsbad. The Falcons are headed into the CIF San Diego Open Division playoffs with Coach John Olive leading his Falcons on a streak of 50 straight league wins. As of press time, the team is 25-2 on the year and an undefeated 8-0 in the league.


Their last stop before the playoffs begin is the big rivalry game against La Costa Canyon High School on Friday. Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

The Falcons are led in scoring by the Pope brothers, junior twins Michael and Bryce, and 6’5” senior point guard Finn Sullivan. Bryce Pope leads the team in scoring with 23.3 points per game and together the twins average more than 35 points per game.

Finn averages 17.8 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists a game and leads all players in the San Diego section with 15 charges taken.

The league championship-clinching game on Feb. 9 was also Senior Night, a chance to celebrate the team’s seniors Finn, Kevin Kampfer, Charlie Rose, Jacob Raab, Ben McCoy, Tyrus Willden, Ben Marks and team managers Adam Glick, David Fuentes and Anthony Lopez.

The raucous Cardinal Chaos student section, as well as the Falcon bench, went wild when senior Ben Marks got in the game late and drilled a 25-footer.
