A 57-year-old man was behind bars Monday on suspicion of murder in the stabbing death of another man during a fight early Sunday in El Cajon, police said.
Michael Anthony Mena, Jr., was being held without bail in the San Diego Central Jail, where he was booked a little before 5 p.m. Sunday, jail records showed.
Mena is suspected of fatally stabbing a man in the chest early Sunday in an alley near the Walmart on North Second Street, El Cajon police spokesman Lt. Royal Bates confirmed.
Police had not released the victim’s name as of Monday.
The victim’s wife told officers that she, her husband and another man were in a vehicle near the Walmart when her husband got into a fight with Mena in the alley, Lt. Walt Miller said in a statement Sunday.
Mena allegedly stabbed the victim at least one time in the chest, Miller said. His wife and the other man in the vehicle drove the injured man to a hospital, where he died.
El Cajon officers were able to get a description of the suspect, and an officer patrolling near Wells Park located Mena and arrested him about 9:30 a.m.
Police said it was unclear if the victim and suspect knew each other.
Mena was expected to be arraigned later in the week at the El Cajon courthouse.
