Baseball:
Cathedral Catholic advanced to the San Diego Section Open Division finals after narrow victories in the first two rounds.
The Dons defeated Helix 2-1 behind a clutch pitching effort from Connor Lunn, who tossed a complete-game three-hitter.
Lunn struck out four batters and allowed no walks and no unearned runs.
Quinn Hoffman, Cade Brown and Quinn Hoffman each contributed one hit, and Wyatt Hoffman had one RBI.
The victory followed a 7-6 win against Carlsbad on May 25 in which Cade Brown had a double and one RBI to lead the Dons.
Bradley Polinsky and Kai Walter each had one hit and one RBI and Cole Mueller added one hit.
Dons starter Preston Price, who was credited with the victory, allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Jordan Chang struck out four batters and allowed one run on three hits and no walks in 2 1/3 innings in relief of Price. Chang was credited with the save.
The Dons improved to 23-9 overall for the season.
One loss away from elimination, Torrey Pines got the playoff win it needed to advance to the Division I finals.
The Falcons defeated Valhalla 6-1 on May 28 in a third-round game.
The Falcons opened the double-elimination tournament with an 8-1 first-round victory over Valhalla on May 25.
They had to play an extra game after losing to Granite Hills 3-2 on May 2
The Falcons were scheduled to play Granite Hills in the May 31-June 2 championships.
The Falcons improved to 20-12 overall for the season.
La Costa Canyon was eliminated from the Open Division playoffs after experiencing a 2-1 second-round loss to Grossmont on May 27.
The loss followed a 4-3 first-round defeat at the hands of La Jolla Country two days earlier.
Mickey Moniak had two hits including a home run and two RBI to lead the Mavericks.
Brandon Bay added two hits and one RBI and Marcus Alazard contributed a double.
The Mavericks fell to 23-7 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian was eliminated from the Division I playoffs after a 6-1 loss to Valhalla on May 27.
Murphy Stehly had two hits including a double and one RBI to lead the Eagles, who were held to four hits.
The Eagles lost to Granite Hills 5-0 in a first-round game on May 25 in which Stehly had four hits.
The Eagles fell to 19-11 overall for the season.
Softball:
Cathedral Catholic lost to Mater Dei Catholic 3-1 in a third-round Open Division playoff game on May 24.
Dons starter Megan Faraimo struck out five batters and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks in six innings.
The Dons were held to three hits.
Raven LeClair was 1-for-3 with a double and one RBI to lead the Dons offensively.
Olivia LaQua added one hit and one RBI and Jacey Bourgeois contributed one hit.
The Dons fell to 25-5-1 overall for the season.
Golf:
Torrey Pines placed second at the Southern California Regional Championships at the Brookside Golf Club (Course No. 1) on May 26.
The Falcons shot a 370 team score, finishing four shots behind first-place Westlake.
The Falcons qualified for the June 1 state championship for the sixth time in seven years and for the second consecutive year.
The state championship was scheduled to be held at San Gabriel Golf Course.
Freshman Gian-Luca Martinez and Kyoshiro Azumada each shot 1-over-par 73 scores to lead the Falcons. Kaiwen Lie contributed a 74 score.
Moniak honored:
LCC standout Moniak was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year for California.
Moniak, a senior who’s committed to UCLA, is expected to be selected in this month’s amateur draft.
Moniak batted .476 (50 for 105) with 46 RBI. He hit safely in all but two of the 29 games in which he played.
