Torrey Pines exacted a measure of revenge against San Marcos and it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time as the Falcons defeated San Marcos 50-39 in the championship game of the Horsman Automotive Tournament on Dec. 12.
Three days earlier, the Falcons experienced a 58-54 loss at the hands of San Marcos in pool play of the same tournament.
But in the championship game Falcons clamped down on the defensive side and tournament MVP Jackson Strong powered their offense with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Seven Hickman added 10 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.
The Falcons advanced to the finals after a 55-33 win against Mission Hills two days earlier in which Strong scored 15 points and Dylan Bona added 13 points.
Strong led the Falcons with 17 points and Jacob Gilliam added 16 points in a 58-54 loss to San Marcos on Dec. 9.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 4-1.
San Diego Jewish Academy had its three-game winning streak snapped as the Lions lost to Castle Park 54-50 in a Baron Matador Classic Tournament game on Dec. 10.
Cody Brown scored 26 points in defeat for the Lions.
The Lions opened the tournament with a 56-32 victory over Holtville on Dec. 7 in which Carmelo Xia led the team with 16 points and Sam Deverett added 13 points.
The Lions defeated Mar Vista (Imperial Beach) 71-57 on Dec. 9.
Brown led the Lions with 21 points, and Jordan Battaglia and Ivan Fang added 18 and 11 points, respectively.
Cathedral Catholic went 1-2 in the prestigious Father Barry Classic Tournament at Jesuit High of Carmichael (Sacramento County).
The Dons lost to Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 66-59 in their Dec. 12 tournament finale.
Austin Beech scored 15 points in defeat for the Dons and Cam Moore added 14 points.
Reid Johnson contributed three points and 10 rebounds.
The Dons opened the tournament with a 68-55 victory over St. Ignatius of San Francisco on Dec. 10 in which Brandon McCoy led the team with 27 points and 14 rebounds and Beech added 22 points.
The Dons lost to Jesuit 60-57 the next day. McCoy led the Dons with 22 points and Johnson added 10 points. The Dons were outscored 25-10 by the tournament hosts in the fourth quarter.
Girls basketball:
Cathedral Catholic lost to Mt. Carmel 43-35 in a Tip-Off Classic Tournament game on Dec. 11.
Freshman standout Kaylee Stiffler scored 12 points and pulled down 21 rebounds in defeat for the Dons. Skyler Pierce added 11 points.
The loss followed a 61-34 defeat at the hands of Westview in the tournament opener on Dec. 8 in which Stiffler led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Girls soccer:
Torrey Pines extended its unbeaten streak to start the season to five games as the Falcons defeated Carlsbad 3-1 in a Butch Lee Memorial Tournament game on Dec. 11.
Amber McCorkle had one goal and one assist to lead the Falcons and Jessica Wright and Sarah Trissel each added one goal.
The victory followed a 3-1 win against La Jolla the previous day in which Callie Petrey-Juarez scored one goal and one assist to lead the Falcons.
Wright, McCorkle and Laura Walton each added one goal and Katie Dove, Nicole Buckley and Jade Babcock-Chi each added one assist.
Petrey-Juarez scored the Falcons only goal in a 1-1 tie with Foothill of Santa Ana in a nonleague game on Dec. 10.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 4-0-1.
Host Cathedral Catholic lost to Mater Dei of Santa Ana 2-1 in a Butch Lee Memorial Tournament game on Dec. 11.
Madison Mercado scored the Dons’ only goal off an assist from Olivia Erlbeck.
The Dons opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over San Marcos on Dec. 8 in which Dana Dalton led team with two goals.
Sunny Dunphy added one goal and Erlbeck contributed two assists.
The Dons defeated Rancho Bernardo 2-0 two days later. Erlbeck scored one goal and had one assist to lead the Dons and Mercado added one goal.
Erin Kelly and Kelli McCarthy combined for the shutout.
The Dons improved to 2-1 overall for the season.
