Beer & Sake Festival includes SushiMasters competition

The Japan Society of San Diego and Tijuana (JSSDT) hosted its 7th Annual Beer & Sake Festival on June 25 at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar. The epicurean event featured the SushiMasters California Regional Competition presented by the California Rice Commission. The competition was emceed by Emmy award-winning Sam Zien (aka “Sam the Cooking Guy”) and Junichi Fukushima, general chief Benihana sushi chef.

SushiMasters combines the traditions of Japanese sushi and cuisine with the premium medium grain rice grown in California’s Sacramento Valley. Attendees witnessed the live, professionally judged competition and had the opportunity to taste Japanese and Asian-fusion delicacies paired with Japanese and local beer and sake.

The winning chef - Hyun Min Suh, Sushi Ran, Sausalito - received a cash prize, a crystal award and a chance to compete for the SushiMasters title in Los Angeles on Sept. 20.

The Beer & Sake Festival also featured the culinary stylings of restaurants such as The Oceanaire Seafood Room, Fish Joint, Cafe Japengo, Zenbu, The Local, Sea Rocket Bistro, Negai and Harrah’s Resort Restaurants.
