Benefit for jet crash victims announced
A benefit to raise money for the man who lost his family in the crash of a Marine jet in University City will be held at the premiere of a comedy film in Beverly Hills, it was announced Saturday.
The producers of “Sounds’’ said they will donate $1 for each moviegoer who attends the Dec. 30 screening of the movie during the Beverly Hills Hi-Def Film Festival at the Fine Arts Theater.
Executive Producer Robert Lenney said he is encouraging fellow producers and other businesses to make similar contributions.
The money would go to Dong Yoon, whose wife, two daughters and mother-in- law died Dec. 8 when an F/A-18D Hornet plunged into their home.
The pilot was on a training flight when he lost power in an engine. He ejected safely when the plane’s second engine failed on approach to MCAS Miramar.
“We grieve for Mr. Yoon and just wanted to help in some way,’’ Lenney said. “The Fine Arts Theater has seating for 410 people, so this could possibly generate tens of thousands of dollars in support with a full theater and many companies stepping up to donate.’’
The festival and several other businesses will match the donations, the producer said.
Lenney said interested donors should contact him before the premiere by e-mailing him at
- He said he will contact donors the following day with an attendance figure.
