The San Diego Business Journal recently named locally-based Ultimate Labs one of the ‘Best Places to Work’ at a ceremony held at the Mission Bay Hilton Resort. The annual list is announced each summer by the publication in conjunction with the Best Companies Group. Nominations are accepted in the early part of the year and each nominee undergoes a rigorous qualifying round that includes employee input via a two-part survey to determine who makes the list of top 100 companies in San Diego County.

The survey and awards program is designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in San Diego, ultimately benefiting the county’s economy, workforce and local businesses by sharing some of the creative programs that make them stand out. The Best Places to Work in San Diego list is composed of 100 companies ranging from small, medium, large to mega depending on employee size.

Kim Lim is the founder and CEO of Ultimate Labs. The Carmel Valley resident says this fall will mark the company’s fifth-year anniversary. Lim says Ultimate Labs has shown steady and solid growth in both their client base and revenue over the past five years. She is exuberant over the announcement saying, “We have achieved this honor because of our clients and our excellent team which possesses over 25 years of experience. Each and every one of them strives to give their best every day. Our motto of ‘helping you save lives’ is the overarching message we convey and what we stand behind. We have great plans in store for the many years to come.”

Ultimate Labs is an analytical testing laboratory providing environmental monitoring, microbial, water and food testing to the pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device and food industries.

Companies had to fulfill eligibility requirements to be considered for participation. They included being a San Diego-based business with operations for a minimum of one year and a workforce of at least 15 locally-based employees. Companies could either be a publicly or privately held business. They could also be either a for-profit, not-for-profit or a government entity.

The most important component in the selection process was a two-part survey. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75 percent of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. The Best Companies Group managed the overall registration, survey process and analyzed the data using their market expertise to determine the final rankings.

Many of the companies on the Top 100 list, including Ultimate Labs, have programs in place which are designed to give back to the community. Some of the volunteer programs Ultimate Labs works with include Habitat for Humanity, the San Diego Food Bank and other organizations. The company also has an employee incentive program granting awards to top performers. Team members are able to participate in cross departmental training for career growth and higher learning. Advanced certification is also promoted via employee tuition funding upon approval for continuing education.

This year’s sponsors for the event were Moss Adams LLP, Fisher & Phillips LLP and the Active Network. More information on the annual program can be found at www.bestplacestoworksd.com
