Cathedral graduates bid a fond farewell

Cathedral Catholic High School had 332 graduates toss their caps at University of San Diego’s Jenny Craig Pavilion last Saturday. This was the first class to attend the Carmel Valley campus for all four years since their move from the old University of San Diego High campus in Linda Vista in 2005.

Principal Michael Deely said the school is very proud of the class of 2009.

“The students combined completed over 20,000 hours of community service and won numerous academic and athletic programs,” Deely said.

Academically, they have a National Merit Scholarship finalist and athletically they won two state titles in football and volleyball. The two state championship team’s stand-outs, Tyler Gaffney and Lexi Williamson, will go on to play at Santa Clara and Stanford universities respectively.

Deely said 99.9 percent of the graduates are going to college next year.

Sonam Dhiman was the valedictorian and Alexandria Jaksha and Nathaniel Balmert shared salutatorian honors.
