Artists, chefs to gather for ‘Celebrate the Craft’

Artists, chefs, farmers, ranchers and vintners will converge at The Lodge at Torrey Pines on Halloween weekend, Oct 31 through Nov. 1, for the seventh annual “Celebrate the Craft.”

The festival will highlight California’s food, wine and art, and will feature food artisans from across California. The food and wine portion of the festival will peak on Sunday, with a full day of cooking demonstrations by chefs from San Diego’s premier restaurants. The festival also will feature the Torrey Pines Plein Air Invitational, which will showcase California’s natural environments through the work of artists.

Each year, the event brings the country’s finest Plein Air, or “open air,” painters who set up their canvases on site to capture the regional feel of San Diego. A reception and art auction will take place Oct. 31 and will include cocktails, a dinner reception and an opportunity to bid on paintings created during “Celebrate the Craft.”

Tickets for the dinner are $125. A picnic will be held Nov. 1 on the Arroyo Terrance and will allow guests to visit various food stations featuring area growers, vintners and suppliers to sample products.

NINE-TEN will host Cooks Confab event

NINE-TEN restaurant and The Cooks Confab will host an evening of food and wine from 3 to 6 p.m. June 7 on the outdoor terrace of NINE-TEN at La Jolla’s Grande Colonial Hotel.

The Cooks Confab is a group of like-minded San Diego chefs who believe in the “farm and sea to table approach to regional cuisine.”

The chefs collaborate every few months to create a meal centered on a theme or central ingredient. Each dinner is held at a different member’s restaurant.

The theme of the NINE-TEN dinner will be meat and include samplings prepared by each of the 12 participating chefs.

The cost is $90 a person and includes tax, gratuity and wine. Five dollars from each ticket sold will be donated to Slow Food Urban San Diego. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (858) 964-5400.
