Christian Life beats SD Jewish Academy in two hoops games

With the regular basketball season winding down and the playoffs around the corner, the San Diego Jewish Academy girls and boys basketball teams traveled north Feb. 10 to take on the Christian Life Academy in Escondido.

SDJA girls and boys had already lost to CLA on Jan. 22 in a Citrus West League contests. So splitting the series was on the SDJA players’ minds. But the CLA lady Eagles (17-7, 7-0), lived up to their No. 3 rank in Division 5 basketball by dominating SDJA Lady Lions (14-7, 3-4) by a 75-22 score.

The boys contest was also one-sided as the Eagles (10-13, 5-2) beat the Lions (12-7, 3-4) 78-40.

Girls basketball:

The girls contest was won in the first quarter, as Christian Life came out smoking on offense and sticking like glue to their full-court defense. CLA had a 12-0 lead before SDJA’s Aliya Luther scored her team’s first 2 points midway through the first quarter.

The hole was dug deeper for the Lions as CLA stretched their lead to 48-17 at the half.

The bright spot for SDJA was Luther, who finished the game with 16 of her team’s 22 points.

The third quarter score was 62-20 and the final was 75-22.

Boys basketball:

The game was close in the first quarter as the teams traded baskets. CLA was up 14-9 via 4 treys by Andrew McCarthy, but SDJA’s Drew Ferris scored 7 of his team’s 13 points to trail 19-13 after one quarter.

The second quarter saw the Eagles raining treys as they drained 5 three-pointers outscoring the Lions 29-15, pushing their halftime lead to 48-28.

SDJA’s Stan Kaplun scored 7 of his team’s 15 points including one three-pointer.

The third quarter saw a SDJA scoring drought as the Lions only managed 4 points, putting them at 67-32 going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, SDJA’s Andrew Retzer scored 5 of his team’s 8 points, but the damage was already done and CLA won 78-40.
