City bike plan being updated

The city of San Diego is working on its Bicycle Master Plan update, hoping to create a city with more mobility options that are safe and effective. The plan includes enhanced bike routes, bike paths (such as the one along Highway 56) and bike lanes, as well as education programs to make riding the road a little safer.

“Carmel Valley is one of the richest bike facility areas in the city,” said Kathy Keehan, executive director of the San Diego Bicycle Coalition. “You’re extraordinarily lucky that the city doesn’t have to do a lot of retrofitting here.” The plan has prioritized a list of projects throughout the city and Carmel Valley has number 43 on the list—an improvement of the 5/56 bike path’s link to El Camino Real.

The Carmel Valley Community Planning Board took a look at the plan at its June 8 meeting and said they’d hoped a priority project would be linking the 5/56 CVREP (Carmel Valley Restoration Enhancement Project) bike path under Interstate 5. This would create a very useful link to Torrey Pines State Beach for Carmel Valley residents to ride or walk to the beach without having to use Carmel Valley Road.
