Coastal Cleanup Day hits 25 years of service

This year marks the 25th anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD). San Diego Coastkeeper and I Love A Clean San Diego, in partnership with the California Coastal Commission, will continue to coordinate San Diego’s largest volunteer event in support of the marine environment.

The mission of CCD is to engage people to remove debris from California’s beaches and waterways, to identify the sources of marine debris, and to change the behaviors that cause pollution. CCD 2008 proved to be another record setting year in San Diego. The event grew by nearly 1,500 volunteers in San Diego County, up to 7,729 volunteers who cleaned up 150 miles of beaches, bays, estuaries, canyons, creeks, rivers and urban areas, removing 160,000 pounds of debris.

Without the help of the volunteers, most of the debris collected would end up polluting the waterways, contaminating soil, damaging marine ecosystems and endangering marine life.
