County roads relatively safe over holiday weekend

Drunken driving arrests this Memorial Day holiday weekend are about steady from last year in San Diego County and across the state, a California Highway Patrol official said Tuesday.

But no one has been killed on San Diego County roads or highways since the Memorial Day weekend count started at 6 p.m. Friday.

Across California, 32 people have died in traffic collisions over the first 60 hours of the holiday reporting period, with 10 of those fatalities reported up in Los Angeles County and three in Orange County.

Ninety people were arrested in San Diego County between 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Tuesday for drunken driving, said CHP Officer Rob Sanchez, compatred to 93 arrests last year.

Across the state, 1,296 people were arrested for DUI between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Tuesday. Last year, that figure was 1,301, according to Sanchez.

In 40 percent of CHP-investigated accidents, those killed were not wearing seatbelts, according to Sanchez.

In the comparable period last year, 19 people died in traffic crashes across the state.
