Del Mar City Council supports Gregory Canyon Protection Bill
The Del Mar City Council voted to support Senate Bill 833, which would prohibit the construction and operation of a landfill in Gregory Canyon, an undeveloped area off state Route 76 at the headwaters of the San Luis Rey River.
The resolution was adopted 4-0-1, with Councilmember Mark Filanc abstaining.
According to a memorandum, the council has consistently opposed the construction of a proposed Gregory Canyon landfill because of the potential of a catastrophic impact on the San Luis Rey River and groundwater basin as well as the risk of harm posed by the heavy traffic crossing the San Diego Aqueduct.
The landfill would operate for 30 years and store 1 million tons of trash annually.
