Del Mar racetrack’s Opening Day is fabulous fun

Clouds and general gloom didn’t keep the crowds away for the 73rd Opening Day of the Del Mar racetrack season on July 21. The Thoroughbred Club announced its all-time attendance was broken when 45,309 people showed up, most in their finest fashions with many sporting spectacular hats.

The One and Only Truly Fabulous Hat Contest featured an array of wild, crazy and colorful hats, with the grand prize and award for Funniest/Most Outrageous going to Fay Meitz.

Among the La Jollans gracing the scene, who are not pictured, were Yolanda Walther-Meade, Wendy Segall, Sally Thornton, Dawn Davidson and Molly McKeller.
