Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotarians hold ‘demotion’ celebration
The Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary Club celebrated the end of President Steve Weitzen’s term with its annual demotion party June 22 at Morgan Run Country Club. The happy group began with appetizers on the patio and moved inside for dinner and “roast” of President Steve.
Incoming President Diane Huckabee led the activities by presenting Steve with a plaque that contained a gavel, which he may now keep. DMSB Presidents often have their gavel stolen early in their term, and Steve was no exception. (The only presidents able to keep the gavel all term in the club’s 22-year history were Patricia Case and Jan Parsons.)
Rotarian Kevin Cahill, known for his demotion party productions, entertained everyone as he read from some of President Weitzen’s erudite meeting recaps, which have a life of their own. Not always meeting the Rotarian Four Way Test of “Is It the Truth?”, the recaps were always entertaining and kept members well-informed who were unable to attend.
President Weitzen was then presented with the “real” club gavel by Rotarian of The Year and Sergeant at Arms George Sousa, which was quickly confiscated by Incoming President Diane Huckabee, whose term begins July 1.
The evening ended with a standing ovation for Steve who not only did a great job as president, but also provided outstanding speakers throughout the year.
