The Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD) announced Dec. 18 that Monica Sorenson has been selected as the next principal of Torrey Hills Elementary School.
Sorenson said she is anxious to get through the winter break to start work on Jan. 6.
“I want to let you know that every person I’ve met, from leadership to parents and teachers are just wonderful people. I can feel the excitement and enthusiasm in the district and how everyone is working together toward a common goal,” Sorenson said at the Del Mar school board’s Dec. 18 meeting. “I’m excited to be joining that kind of team. I’m truly thrilled and honored that you selected me.”
Sorenson is replacing principal Barbara Boone, who left to take a job as director of curriculum instruction at the San Diego County Office of Education. Sorenson has worked in the Chula Vista School District for 15 years, including 10 years as a classroom teacher and five years as the principal of Chula Vista Hills Elementary School.
Under her leadership, Chula Vista Hills has won numerous awards and accolades for its academic and wellness accomplishments.
“Mrs. Sorenson is described as a principal who works wonderfully well with parents, teachers and the community to create a positive, dynamic learning environment where students excel,” DMUSD Superintendent Holly McClurg said in a release.
