Derby partygoers raise funds for retired horses
A The Kentucky Derby viewing party was held at Paradise Grill in Del Mar on May 1 to raise funds for CANTER, a nonprofit organization which helps to find homes for retired racehorses. Guests arrived in their finest Derby chapeaus and bid on silent auctions items.
Tracking America’s ex-racehorses
A University of Arizona Race Track Industry program student is conducting a study as part of a required project tracking thoroughbred and standardbred horses in non-racing uses. The objectives of this study are:
- Where are retired racehorses going after leaving racetrack training? Can these horses find satisfied owners and success in competition in careers in a variety of sports in America after racing on the flat track?
- Are there particular American sires whose offspring are especially successful in second careers?
- How are non flat racing thoroughbred and standardbred owners obtaining their off the track horses?
