Dons come back with 46-7 trouncing of SD
Their historic winning streak is over, but one loss doesn’t appear to have made Cathedral Catholic any less dominant.
A week after their school record 26-game winning streak was snapped, the Dons left nothing to chance in a 48-7 trouncing of San Diego in an Eastern League game on Oct. 23.
Jonny Martin rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries to lead the Dons.
Quarterback Max Brewer was an efficient 6-for-8, passing for 171 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Chance Early caught two passes for 105 yards, both of which went for Dons touchdowns.
Brewer completed a 40-yard scoring pass to Derek Thomas early in the first quarter, setting the tone for the win.
The Dons improved 1-1 in league and 6-1 overall for the season.
- Santa Fe Christian kept its unbeaten season alive with a 33-13 Coastal League North victory over Christian of El Cajon on Oct. 24.
Eagles quarterback Keaton Giannotti led a balanced offense that produced 384 total yards.
Giannotti rushed for 86 yards and one touchdown, and was 2-for-5 passing for 79 yards and one touchdown.
Sam Hoekstra rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries and also caught a 35-yard scoring pass from Giannotti.
Trevor Boucher rushed for 54 yards on eight carries for SFC.
Hoekstra eclipsed the century mark in rushing for the sixth straight week, pushing his season rushing total to 969 yards. The Eagles’ big-play back is averaging 15.1 yards per carry and has scored nine touchdowns.
Giannotti got the Eagles going, scoring on a 56-yard run midway through the first quarter.
Joshua Estill led the Eagles defensively with 11 tackles and Kurt Luedtke contributed three tackles and two sacks.
The Eagles improved to 2-0 in league and 7-0 overall for the season.
- San Diego Jewish Academy defeated Midway Baptist of San Diego 27-14 in a Southern League game on Oct. 22.
Lions quarterback Joseph Mizrachi completed 13 of 17 pass attempts for 274 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Mizrachi also helped the Lions with his feet, rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
Rafi Lurie caught five passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
The Lions improved to 4-1 in League and 5-1 overall for the season.
- Torrey Pines’ three-game unbeaten streak ended with a 13-7 Avocado League loss to Mission Hills of San Marcos on Oct. 23.
The Falcons, who hadn’t lost since Sept. 18 (they were 2-0-1 since then with one bye week), fell to 0-1-1 in league and 2-4-1 overall for the season.
The Falcons only score came on John Wilson’s 38-yard scoring run late in the second quarter.
Volleyball:
After taking its lumps in nonleague play, two-time defending state champion Santa Fe Christian appears to be back on track.
The Eagles extended their winning streak to three matches with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 26-24) over Tri-City Christian of Vista in a Coastal League North contest on Oct. 22.
Annie Francis had 14 kills to lead the Eagles and Mackenzie Gilbert added eight kills.
The Eagles improved to 2-0 in league and 16-8 overall for the season.
Water polo:
Canyon Crest Academy remained unbeaten in Valley League play with a 14-3 trouncing of San Marcos on Oct. 22.
Grant Jurgensen had six goals to lead the Ravens and Christian Ogawa had three assists.
Ravens goalie Chase Matthews had 14 assists.
The first-place Ravens improved to 9-0 in league and 14-4 overall for the season.
- Torrey Pines defeated Escondido 15-7 in an Avocado League game on Oct. 22.
Denis Vaisberg scored five goals to lead the Falcons, and Tanner Miller scored three goals and had six assists.
Falcons goalies Adam Kramer and Eric Hsu had 14 and seven saves, respectively.
The Falcons improved to 10-5 in league and 4-2 overall.
Cross country:
Torrey Pines standout Megan Morgan took first place Team Sweepstakes heat at the prestigious Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational.
Morgan clocked a 16:59 on the grueling 2.9-mile course. She was among three Falcons runners to finish in the top eight.
Alli Billmeyer (17:45) placed fifth and Ashlyn Dadkah (17:47) placed eighth.
Field hockey:
Canyon Crest Academy defeated Granite Hills 3-0 in a Helix tournament game on Oct. 23.
Carina Edelman scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Ravens.
The Ravens improved their overall record to 7-6.
