Dons’ winning streak ends in narrow loss
Cathedral Catholic’s remarkable run is over.
The Dons saw their 26-game winning streak snapped on Oct. 16 when they lost to Lincoln of 22-21 in an Eastern League opener for both teams.
The Dons’ winning streak went back to 2007 and included two Div. III San Diego Section titles and a Div. II state title last season. Their streak was the longest in school history and the fourth longest in county history.
The Dons led 14-3 at halftime and opened up a commanding 21-3 lead late in the third quarter when quarterback Max Brewer rushed for a touchdown from the 1-yard line.
But Lincoln quarterback Jake Marion led an inspired comeback, throwing for three touchdowns as the Hornets scored 19 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to send the Dons to their first defeat since Sept. 28, 2007, when they lost to Otay Ranch, 21-9.
The Dons fell to 5-1 overall for the season.
Trailing 3-0 early, the Dons broke through in the second quarter, scoring on Jonny Martin’s run from the 4, and Brewer’s 43-yard pass to Derek Thomas.
Martin rushed for 194 yards on 26 carries to lead the Dons, and Brewer completed 10 of 15 pass attempts for 171 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.
Santa Fe Christian extended its unbeaten season with a 39-17 nonleague victory over Coronado on Oct. 17.
San Hoekstra rushed for 233 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown and also returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown.
Eagles quarterback Keaton Giannotti was 2-for-2 passing for 125 yards and two touchdowns, completing an 84-yard scoring pass to Trent Von Yokes and a 41-yarder to Bobby Zarubin.
The Eagles improved to 6-0 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines appeared to be on its way to what would have been their most significant post-Ed Burke era victory, but in the end the Falcons had to settle for a tie.
The upset-minded Falcons blew a seven-point lead in the closing minutes of a 21-21 tie with unbeaten Escondido in an Avocado League opener for both teams on Oct. 16.
John Wilson rushed for 80 yards on seven carries and Joseph Driscoll rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries to lead the much-improved Falcons, who are playing their ball since Scott Ashby took over the program for Falcons coaching Burk in 2007.
Last season, Escondido beat the Falcons 55-28.
The Falcons broke a 14-14 deadlock early in the fourth quarter on Kevin Cuff’s scoring run from the 1. But Escondido rallied in the closing minutes to tie the game at 21-21.
The Falcons effort left them with a 2-3-1 overall record for the season.
An Oct. 13 nonleague match between Santa Fe Christian and Canyon Crest Academy featured one of San Diego County’s most perennially dominant programs and one of its most intriguing upstarts.
The established program won, as SFC defeated CCA 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17).
Mackenzie Gilbert had 16 kills to lead the Eagles, and Annie Francis contributed 11 kills. Setters Alexa Long and Christie Duoos had 27 and 14 assists, respectively, for the Eagles.
Samantha Cash had 12 kills to lead the Ravens, and setter Kyana Miller dished out 28 assists.
The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 15-8.
First-place Canyon Crest Academy defeated Orange Glen of Escondido 20-4 in a Valley League match on Oct. 13.
Tyler Robinson had six goals to lead the Ravens and Grant Jurgensen added four. Ravens goalie Chase Matthews had 18 saves.
The Ravens improved to 7-0 in league and 10-4 overall for the season

Stephanie Cowles and Alexa Moreno each scored once goal to lead the Falcons.
Falcons goalie Heather Schlesier had eight saves.

Cathedral Catholic defeated Patrick Henry of San Diego 5-0 in a nonleague match on Oct. 16 when Mackenzie Menotti scored two goals to lead the Dons. Megan Brady contributed three assists.
The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 4-4.
Torrey Pines defeated San Pasqual 14-4 in an Avocado League match on Oct. 15 when the Falcons went 9-0 in doubles play.
Jessica Chang and Hannah Palkowitz won by a combined 18-3, Bryn Raschkle and Julia May won by a combined 18-2, and Natalie Williams and Clair Duckett won by a combined 19-10 with one tiebreaker victory.
The Falcons improved to 8-2 in league and 4-1 overall for the season.
Canyon Crest defeated San Dieguito Academy 16-2 in a Coastal League match on Oct. 15.
No. 3 singles player Erica Nesses was 3-0 in match play, winning by a combined 18-2 to lead the Ravens.
Ravens’ No. 1 singles player Paige Press won all three of her matches by a combined 18-7, and No. 2 singles player Lexi Goldberg won all three of her matches by a combined 19-2 with one tiebreaker.
The Ravens improved to 6-1 in league and 9-1 overall for the season.
