Del Mar retailer Fair Trade Décor has been accepted for membership in the Fair Trade Federation and has become the first FTF member retail store in San Diego County. FTF is the trade association that supports North American organizations in the global fair trade movement.
The Fair Trade Federation was formed in 1994 supporting businesses to expand markets for artisans and farmers around the world. The Federation is also an active member of the World Fair Trade Organization. Fair trade creates greater equity and sustainability in international trading by supporting farmers and craftspeople who are socially and economically marginalized. These producers lack economic opportunity and face steep hurdles in finding customers for their goods. At the core of the fair trade model is a direct, cooperative, and transparent relationship between buyers and sellers according to established fair trade principles. FTF and WFTO members create positive change for the poorest of the poor by selling their products in North America, improving the lives of artisans and farmers around the globe.
Fair Trade Décor was founded by Carmel Valley residents Elizabeth and Jude Paganelli in 2011, selling handmade products in local farmers’ markets and street festivals. They opened their retail store in the village of Del Mar in March of this year, expanding the handmade products they sell to include wood furniture, brightly colored table linens and blankets, percussion instruments, books, personal accessories and jewelry. The products are made by artisans from more than 30 countries including the United States, and Fair Trade Décor provides information on the products and country of origin with each purchase.
Fair Trade Décor joins a small number of San Diego area organizations that are also members of the Fair Trade Federation. Seven Hopes United is an online retailer that also participates in area farmers’ markets and street festivals. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps of Escondido is a fair trade wholesale and online retail business, as is Gifts With a Cause/Exotic World Gifts in Del Mar. San Diego wholesaler Manos Zapotecas was also recently accepted into FTF. Although a number of San Diego County retailers sell fair trade products, Fair Trade Décor, located at 1412 Camino Del Mar is the first local retail shop dedicated 100 percent to fair trade. The store is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
