Falcon grapplers open season with win

For years, the Torrey Pines Falcons Wrestling team (2-1, 1-0) has battled in the tough Palomar League with perennial powerhouses. But, this year they are in the Avocado League and opened up with an exciting 45-32 win Jan. 8 over the Escondido Cougars (1-3, 0-1).

Before the match, Falcons Head Coach Jesse Mindlin said, “This should be a good match. Escondido is a good team.” And the match was as predicted.

Each round consist of three two-minute periods. Points were awarded for takedowns, escapes, reversals, near falls, stalling or technical fouls, such as locking hands. If there was no pin after three periods, the wrestler with the most points wins the match.

In an exciting match for the 145-pound class, Falcons Tony Palladino beat Escondido’s Adon Perez 7-3. In the 152-pound class, after leading 4-1 Alex Pisacane pinned Cougar D.J. Revilla in the second period, putting the Falcons up 9-0. Alex is one of North County’s top wrestlers in his weight class.

160-pound Falcon Spence Sarazin pinned Rafael Nunez in the 1st period, T.P. cruising to 15-0.

171-pound Martin Wang pinned Cougar Jerry Evereti in the second period. After a close the first period, Keegan McAllister pinned Escondido’s Kent Mitchell, giving T.P. a commanding 27-0 lead. But then, 215-pound Cougar Augie Desantis pinned Robert Murray in the second period, making it 27-6.

Heavyweight Moses Chairez of Escondido is one of the top wrestlers in his weight class in the North County and he proved it by leading 18-6 and pinning Harry Wilburn just before the end of the final period allowing the Cougars to reach 27-12.

In the 103-pound class Falcons Jared Moore pinned A.J. Robleza. Falcons 112-pound Don Casy pinned Jimmy Huynh in the second period, then Justin Tovar of Escondido won by forfeit. Escondido’s Lance Garcia also won by forfeit, making the score 39-24. The 130-pound class got interesting as Escondido’s Joe Spina out-pointed Andrew Eckberg 8-4 to close the gap to 39-27. Next, 135-pound Cougar Robert Mata scored 19-2 after a technical fall over Dylan Max.

To finish it off the Falcon’s Dillon Joyce won by forfeit because Escondido didn’t have a wrestler in the 140-pound class, making the final score of 45-32.

Torrey Pines now has a good shot at the league title and rivals La Costa Canyon may be their only stumbling block.
