Falcon wrestlers beat San Marcos in close match
San Diego Section Varsity High School Wrestling took place Dec. 11, at host Torrey Pines’ gym. The Falcons (1-1) rallied in their last two matches after, being down 27-33 to the San Marcos Knights (1-1), to tie and win a close and exciting white-knuckle, non-league match 39-33.
“I’m excited about this season,” Falcons head wrestling Coach Jesse Mindlin said. “San Marcos is a strong team and we will have to wrestle well to win. We will forfeit some weight classes and will need to make those points up.”
In high school wrestling, the wrestlers compete in weight classes starting from 103 pounds up to the heavyweights over 215 pounds. Each wrestler weighs in before the match.
Torrey did not have wrestlers in the 112 and 189 pound class, thus resulting in a forfeit and 6 points each added to San Marcos’ total.
The Torrey Pines’ junior varsity team beat San Marcos 51-39.
Some of the match highlights are as follows: The 140-pound division was a very tough match, as Falcon Dillon Joyce beat Grant Moreau 6-4, Falcons trailing 12-24. 145-pound Falcon, Tony Palladino, outscored Drasko Bigdanovich 9-4, the Falcons chipping away 15-24.
The 152-pound division went back and forth point-wise and was tied after two periods. But the Knights’ Jarrod McGeehee beat Alex Pisacane by the score of 18-13, Knights up 27-15.
The final outcome was determined in the last match, where the Falcon’s Harry Wilburn pinned Eric Rios with 1:08 left in the 1st period, to lead Torrey Pines to a 39-33 victory.
