Driver dies in Solana Beach crash
A man was driving eastbound on Lomas Santa Fe Drive approaching South Cedros Avenue when his vehicle veered to the right and struck a vehicle in the adjacent right-hand lane at about 1:40 p.m. on March 28.
The vehicle drove up onto the sidewalk and struck the signal lamppost located on the southwest corner of Lomas Santa Fe Drive and South Rios Drive. The post was uprooted from its base and fell to the ground striking another vehicle that was traveling eastbound.
The 59-year-old male driver was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. Witnesses observed him slumped over the steering wheel as the vehicle drove off the roadway. He had pre-existing medical conditions and is believed to have been unconscious prior to impact.
The man’s name is withheld, pending notification of next of kin. No one else was injured during the collision.
