Fireworks fundraising kicks into high gear

Fundraising efforts for the July 4th fireworks event at La Jolla Cove are well underway, says Deborah Marengo, of the La Jolla Community Fireworks Foundation. She said the group is making plans for a festive event again this year with additional details to be announced soon.

Last May, the group formed to save the event when restaurateur George Hauer, who had co-hosted the event the past 24 years along with First Republic Bank, said would not host it because of rising costs and the recession. With an appeal to the community and local businesses, foundation members were able to not only raise money to hold the fireworks display — with Hauer’s logistical assistance — but also brought the Marine Aircraft Wing’s 40-piece band to the event.

The foundation raised $45,000 for the 2009 event and was able to hold onto a little for seed money for this year, but they need the community’s help to keep the event going, Marengo said.

Adam Harris, who spearheaded the campaign with Marengo, has said that if every La Jollan made “even a modest donation,” the event could be successful this year and an endowment set up for the future.

Anyone wishing to contribute can do so at www.lajollafireworks.org. All contributions are tax deductable and will be used only to produce the Fourth of July event, he said.
