First-place Falcons improve record
Girls soccer:
Torrey Pines was expected to dominate in its first year in the Avocado League and the Falcons haven’t disappointed.
Torrey Pines defeated San Pasqual of Escondido 1-0 in a Feb. 3 league game, and then trounced Fallbrook 10-0 two days later.
The first-place Falcons improved to 4-0 in league and 13-2-2 overall for the season.
Katie Trees scored the Falcons only goal on an assist from Kara Koeneke and goalie Annie
Heaton had three saves in the San Pasqual game.
Alexandra Bailey scored three goals and Trees and Emily Jones each scored two goals for the Falcons in the Fallbrook game.
La Jolla exacted a measure of revenge against Cathedral Catholic, defeating the defending San Diego Section Div. III and state champion Dons 4-1 in a Western League match that was a rematch of last year’s section title game.
Danielle Brito scored the Dons only goal on an assist from Kendall Kraus. Dons goalie Eileen Purner had six saves.
The Dons fell to 4-2-1 in league and 9-8-4 overall for the season.
Boys basketball:
Torrey Pines lost a share of first place in the Avocado League after a tough loss to La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad on Jan. 30.
But if their most recent showings are any indicator, the Falcons haven’t lost their edge.
And as a result of decisive wins over San Pasqual of Escondido and Fallbrook, the Falcons remain very much alive in the title hunt.
The Falcons beat San Pasqual 65-30 on Feb. 3 and defeated Fallbrook 58-50 three days later.
Torrey Pines has won three consecutive games, six of its last seven and eight of its last 10. The Falcons improved to 5-1 in league and 19-4 overall for the season. They trail first place LCC (18-4, 6-0) by just one game.
Trevor Newquist scored 14 points and Nick Kerr had 10 points and six rebounds to lead the Falcons in the San Pasqual game. Spencer Klein and Max Heller each added eight points for the Falcons. Klein also had five assists.
Newquist scored 22 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Falcons in the Fallbrook game. Colin Porter added 14 points and five rebounds.
Tough-to-figure-out Cathedral Catholic in a matter of three days went from famine to feast.
After being effectively shut down in a 46-36 Western League loss to last-place Lincoln of San Diego on Feb. 3, the Dons doubled their production in a 72-59 upset victory over St. Augustine of San Diego in a Feb. 6 league contest.
The Dons remained in third place and kept their title aspirations alive, improving to 5-4 in league and 13-10 overall for the season. The Dons trail first place University City of San Diego and St. Augustine (both 6-2) by one and a half games, and are among four teams separated by just two games.
Everett Benyard scored 19 points to lead the Dons in the St. Augustine game. Nick Nixon added 13 points and Matt Moynihan added 11 points.
Moynihan led the Dons with 11 points in the Lincoln game, and Sean Gray added 10 points.
Santa Fe Christian suffered its first Coastal North League game Feb. 3, when first-place Army-Navy of Carlsbad beat the Eagles 60-52.
The loss dropped the Eagles to 3-1 in league and 16-6 overall for the season.
Tyler Davis scored 19 points to lead the Eagles and Karl Holmlund added 10 points.
Jacob Katz scored 22 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead San Diego Jewish Academy to a 67-41- victory over Guajome Park Academy of Vista in a Citrus West League game on Feb. 5.
Andrew Retzer contributed 21 points and had four assists for the Lions, and Stan Kaplun added 10 points.
SDJA won its third game in a row to improve to 4-3 in league and 10-6 overall for the season.
Girls basketball:
For the first time in more than a year, Cathedral Catholic isn’t alone at the top.
The Dons, who last year were unbeaten league champions, fell into a two-way tie for first place after suffering an improbable 46-43 loss to Our Lady of the Peace of San Diego on Feb. 6.
The Dons fell to 7-1 in league and 14-8 overall for the season. The Pilots improved to 7-1 in league and 20-5 overall.
Katie Dollard scored 16 points to lead the Dons, and Victoria Lippert added 13 points.
Megan Fennessy scored 16 points to lead Torrey Pines to a 54-20 shellacking of Fallbrook in an Avocado League game on Feb. 6.
Heather Servin added 11 points for the Falcons, who improved to 3-2 in league and 13-10 overall for the season.
Jo Carlson scored 22 points to lead Santa Fe Christian to a 51-47 overtime victory over Bakersfield Christian in a Feb. 7 nonleague game at The Master’s College of Santa Clarita.
The Eagles won their fifth consecutive game to improve their overall record for the season to 15-8.
Kiara Quinn scored 17 points for the Eagles, and Brittany Pace added nine points.
Bishop’s of La Jolla defeated Canyon Crest Academy 65-35 in a Coastal South League game on Feb. 3.
Alisha Eckberg and Meghan Brown each scored 11 points for CCA, which fell to 2-2 in league and 12-9 overall for the season.
Eckberg had seven rebounds and three assists, and Brown pulled down eight boards and had two steals.
