First Revelle award goes to former vice president

Roger Revelle Prize given to Gore: A jar of mud

Al Gore, winner of the inaugural Roger Revelle Prize, accepts a jarred sample of mud from Tony Haymet, director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, on March 6 as members of Revelle’s family look on. Revelle collected the mud during some of his early research. The ceremony, recognizing the former vice president for ‘thinking on a planetary scale’ was part of a three-day celebration of Roger Revelle’s 100th birthday.
