Fish art to line the coast

More than 400 students from Del Mar Heights Academy created art from recycled materials. Now their work will take on a new form, as they will install their “fish sticks” along Del Mar’s coastline.

The students, under the direction of recycled-trash artist Rodney “Rodrigo” McCoubrey, embellished wooden fish with recycled trash collected from the beach and home.

On May 30, in conjunction with the fifth annual Keep Del Mar Clean community beach cleanup, the fish sticks will be on display along the coastline from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Powerhouse Park north to Dog Beach. The cleanup is set to begin at 9 a.m. at Powerhouse Park.

Filmmakers from DMTV have been documenting the effort and are fundraising to create an educational documentary.

Organizers hope the idea will catch on and that other communities will follow in working to reverse the negative impact on trash on the beaches.
