Fog causes flight delays

Dense fog caused several incoming and outgoing flights to be delayed this morning at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field.

Southwest Airlines posted more delayed flights than any other airline, with 23 delayed as of 7 a.m., according to San Diego International Airport’s Web site. United Airlines posted six delayed flights, American Airlines posted three, U.S. Airways posted two and Frontier posted one.

A dense fog advisory issued by the National Weather Service for coastal and valley areas was scheduled to expire at 9 a.m.

“Motorists on Interstates 5 and 805 and nearby freeways and possibly Interstate 15 may encounter areas of very low visibilities in dense fog through the morning commute,’’ the weather service said in an advisory.

“If driving, slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you,’’ the advisory urged.

The fog may reduce visibility to a quarter-mile or less in some areas, possibly down to near zero, according to the NWS.

Once the fog lifts, mostly sunny conditions are expected, accompanied by temperatures in the 70s.

The NWS today also issued a high surf advisory scheduled to expire at midnight.
