Former Torrey Pines student admits to four bank robberies
A 19-year-old Torrey Pines High School student who admitted to robbing four banks on Thursday may have been pushed to turn himself in after the death of childhood friend Chelsea King, according to a 10News report.
Evan McGehee is an honor student and was on the varsity track team when he reconnected with King, a Poway High School runner and childhood friend.
Apparently the McGehee’s family suffered a number of setbacks and the teen was living out of his car his senior. He turned to robbing banks as a way to help his family.
Those close the McGehee told 10News that King’s death may have prompted McGehee to turn himself in.
The judge delayed his sentencing until September so that McGehee could undergo an extensive psychological examination.
