Free concert offered at the library

The Friends of the Carmel Valley Library’s free family music program presents soprano Mariko Kanamitsu on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in the library’s community room.

Pianist Mizue Shapiro and cellist Takashi Kiyoizumi will accompany Kanamitsu for the program, which will include trios by Handel, Schubert, Bernstein, and Previn; duets for cello and piano by Piazzolla and Chopin; and several pieces for soprano and piano.

Kanamitsu, a Tokyo native, moved to the United States in 1985, performing and studying voice in Washington D.C. Since moving to Del Mar Heights in 2001 she has performed at the Athenaeum in La Jolla, community colleges and the San Diego Central Library.

Shapiro, also a native of Tokyo, has studied classical piano and jazz piano and will be graduating from San Diego State with a bachelors’ degree in music composition this fall. One of her compositions won the New Composer’s Award from the Japan Society of Contemporary Music in 2006. She is currently teaching piano, performing as an accompanist, and composing.

Kiyoizumi plays cello with the Poway Community Symphonette and Alexandria String Quartet. Before moving to San Diego he played with the Yokosuka Symphony Orchestra, All-Japan Medical School Orchestra, Keio University Medical School Orchestra, and MIT Symphony Orchestra. He has also played with the Poway Community Symphony Orchestra and Palomar Symphony Orchestra.
