Grads elevate CCA from its ‘humble beginnings’
Canyon Crest Academy said goodbye to its second graduating class last Friday afternoon.
Principal Brian Kohn said that the 413 seniors are a wonderful group of young people who have grown up alongside the 5-year-old school.
“They have moved CCA from humble beginnings to a place where we are academically, athletically and artistically second to none,” Kohn said. “They have done so much, I am so proud of them and I look forward to the many years ahead filled with the outstanding achievements of the class of 2009.”
Canyon Crest does not have a valedictorian; instead they use graduation as a stage for talented speakers and performers.
Jaron Mercer, Ryder Davidson and Katie Balch opened graduation with a performance of The Strokes song “I’ll Try Anything Once.”
Cynthia Mersten, who last year played Rizzo in “Grease,” sang the National Anthem.
Speakers included class president Shira Golden, Associated Student Body President Isabelle Giap, Katherine Balch and Elliot Reich.
Musical performances included Kelsey Knox singing “My Friend” and Jake Disraeli, Melad Neyab and Kendahl Newman rocking out to an original song to the melody of Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida.”
The ceremony closed with the class of 2009’s senior song: “One More Time” by Daft Punk, the lyrics predicting a fun Grad Night later that evening: “We’re gonna celebrate and dance for free, one more time.”
