Health insurance help for unemployed San Diegans

California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner was in San Diego Monday to tout a Web site that outlines health insurance options for the recently unemployed.

The nonprofit organization Foundation for Health Coverage Education’s Web site --

-- provides access to 175 public health care program applications.

According to Poizner, nearly 30,000 San Diego residents lost their jobs in January, and subsequently, their health insurance.

“There are resources out there, both public and private, that can help people who don’t have health insurance and want to know what their options are,’' Poizner said.

Poizner, who plans to run for governor as a Republican, discussed health insurance resources at a news conference at Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa.
