Library hosts KidzArt classes
The Carmel Valley Library’s meeting room was filled with little leprechauns on March 12, donning handmade hats to bring some early St. Patrick’s Day cheer.
The children were participating in an after-school art program at the library called KidzArt, a twice-monthly program started by Torrey Pines High School senior Sinae Jung.
Jung, an aspiring artist, started KidzArt last year as a way to bring after-school art to local children. After checking around at area schools, she landed at the library. The library offers an art program once a month, but Jung wanted to bring art to the kids twice a month.
The program is free - Jung and her eight club members buy materials themselves and borrow some from the library.
KidzArt will always accept donations, though.
“We want to get more materials and support the kids,” Jung said.
No registration is required, allowing children and parents to wander in after browsing for some books.
This year, children have made their own calendars, piggy banks and Valentine pins. Jung tries to tailor the art projects to match the seasons and holidays. At the next session on March 26, they will make a flying piggy mobile, and on April 9, they will make an Easter bunny.
On March 12, around 20 children crowded into the library meeting room to make their St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun hats. Made of green construction paper, the hats were affixed to children’s heads with yarn around their chins.
Many of the children had their parents join them.
Mom Lisa Hermiz remarked that she hadn’t done crafts with daughter Angelica in a long time.
Children put their personal touches on their hats - adding shamrocks, hearts, glitter and beads as well as drawing their own designs.
Zoe Sandberg gave her own spin to the project, opting to create instead a leprechaun trap, hoping to entice the little guys with some gold coins.
-Every other Thursday: 4 to 5 p.m. at the Carmel Valley Library
-Up next: March 26, children will make flying piggy mobiles. On April 9, the children will make Easter bunnies.
