Life and music of Spain’s deFalla to be presented at Carmel Valley Library

July’s free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the library’s community room.

Pianist James Frimmer, mezzo- soprano Janelle DeStefano, and script writer and narrator Joanne Regenhardt will present a program on the life and music of Manuel De Falla, the “Saint of Cadiz.”

The program explores the depth of de Falla’s musical genius and his reach into the musical passion of his native Spain, which he wedded to the genre of European classical music. While only a few of his compositions have been popularized in the United States, he produced many works of beauty and originality.

This program is one in a series focusing on the life and music of various composers, such as Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, Samuel Barber, and Robert Schumann. The program will last 45 minutes.

James Frimmer received his bachelor of music and master of music degrees from University of Redlands, where he also served as staff accompanist and won the school’s concerto competition. Janelle DeStefano has a doctor of musical arts degree from USC and is an associate professor of music at Santa Monica College. She has won many vocal competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, and has performed nationwide. Joanne Regenhardt is a retired professional vocalist.
