Local artists to gather at Marston House on May 1

Several North County plein-air painters will show and sell their works beneath a huge oak tree at Save Our Heritage Organization’s May Day at the Marston House - San Diego’s Garden Party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 1. A National Historic Landmark, the Marston House & Gardens is managed by SOHO for the city of San Diego at 3525 Seventh Ave. in Balboa Park.

Toni Williams, who has a solo show at Ivanffy-Uhler Gallery in Carlsbad, Joli Beal of Del Mar and Carole Mayne of Encinitas will be exhibiting along with Paul Strahm, a La Jollan who is president of the San Diego chapter of the California Art Club, the century-old society dedicated to plein-air painting.

Jeff Yeomans, Suzy Spafford (internationally known for Suzy’s Zoo books and cards, but exhibiting her plein-air watercolors), RD Riccoboni, and Duke Windsor are also part of the group SOHO has invited to participate in this multifaceted inaugural event. Painters Kenneth W. Roberts, Marjorie Taylor, Linda J. Churchill and Andrea Rushing will also join in the celebration.

May Day at the Marston House will also include the release of hundreds of monarch butterflies. Three new hybrid geraniums, developed by SOHO’s Geranium George Project will be introduced during the garden party and individual plants will be sold. Geranium experts and master gardeners will answer questions, while floral artists guide guests in making traditional May baskets.

Refreshments, accompanied by live music, will be served in a Tea Garden (in the Marston House’s formal garden) and a Wine Garden (on the terrace and lawn).

Proceeds will benefit the restoration of the Marston House grounds.

Admission to the garden party is $5 for adults, $3 for kids under 12. Refreshment tickets for lunch or brunch in the Tea Garden are $12 for adults, $8 for kids under 12. Admission to the Wine Garden is $25 for a tasting of five California wines and appetizers. Call SOHO at (619) 297-9327 or (619) 297-7511.
