Locals tops in Rough Water

Pacific Swim Team took top team honors at the 79th annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim on Sept. 13.

La Jolla’s Windansea team finished second and North Coast Aquatics third in the event that drew teams from Northern California and Arizona.

Pacific entered 28 swimmers and had competitors in each of the three divisions: junior 205 yard, 1-mile and 3-mile.

Swimmers placing in the top five of their division included Brendan Santana, Jake Danzer, Mikaila Barker, Liam Semple, Gillian Logan, Ariel Jordan and Kelsey Borrek.

Coach Grace Vanderbyl placed fifth in the women’s masters division.

Hughes gets volleyball post

Daniel Hughes, currently the director of the Beach and Bay Volleyball Club, has been named the top assistant coach for the UCSD men’s volleyball program, head coach Kevin Ring announced on Sept. 17.

In addition to his role with Beach and Bay, Hughes also served as an assistant coach for both the men and women’s programs at Mesa Community College in 2008-09 and was a boys’ varsity assistant coach at Francis Parker High School from 2007-09.

Hughes was a four-year letter winner at UC Santa Barbara from 1998-2002, where he was a National Golden Eagle Recipient. He went on to play in the Australian Volleyball League for two seasons with the Sydney Lions and Sydney Frogs.

Enforcers tourney slated

The San Diego Enforcers, a nonprofit football team made up of San Diego County law enforcement officers, paramedics and firefighters, will host a golf tournament to support pre-season fundraising. The tournament takes place Nov. 6 at Twin Oaks Golf Course.

The entry fee is $125 for a single golfer and $500 for a foursome. The event will also feature a post-tournament dinner and awards ceremony.
