Man struck by Coaster in Oceanside

A northbound Coaster train struck and killed a 60-year-old man in Oceanside on Thursday, a news release from the North County Transit District reported.

In an apparent suicide, the man stood on the tracks as the train passed through the Cassidy Street intersection at approximately 11 a.m.

There were approximately 50 passengers on the train. Oceanside Police and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the death.

All train service in the vicinity of the incident was temporarily halted, the NCTD reported. Immediately following the incident, passengers on the northbound Coaster train were transported via charter bus to the Oceanside Transit Center. Southbound Coaster passengers headed toward San Diego were transported via Amtrak after a parallel track was reopened.

Passengers waiting for the12:45 p.m. northbound Coaster departure from San Diego were placed aboard a northbound Amtrak train which departed San Diego at 1:02 p.m. Amtrak will transport the passengers to Oceanside, stopping at all of the Coaster stations along the way.

As of 2:15 p.m. NCTD reported that normal service had resumed.
