Memorial walk set for May 16
Del Mar residents are invited to enjoy the city’s coastal beauty and honor a beloved community member at The Jerry Finnell Lagoon to Lagoon Memorial Walk on May 16.
Beginning at Torrey Pines State Beach, participants will walk two miles along the sand to Dog Beach. An outdoor celebration will honor the city’s civic leaders throughout the past 50 years, especially, Jerry Finnell, who died of cancer last year.
“We have many reasons to thank Jerry for during his years of service to the city,” said Mayor Crystal Crawford. “This is a great way to remember him.”
Del Mar Community Connections is hosting the event, which costs $15. All proceeds will support the nonprofit’s care management program, which helps seniors identify the services or assistance they need to remain living safely and independently in their homes.
The memorial walk pays tribute to two of Finnell’s passions--he was a strong advocate of the San Dieguito Lagoon restoration project and a founding board member of Del Mar Community Connections.
The walk also encourages multiple generations to get outside and walk together, something Finnell also enjoyed doing, said Heather Glenn, program director at Del Mar Community Connections.
The walk begins at 9 a.m. and the celebration at Dog Beach begins at 10:30 a.m. Participants can park for free and take a shuttle to the beach from the Winston School. To register, go to
