Miracle League welcomes teams at fall opener

Summer might be over, but America’s favorite warm weather pastime continues for hundreds of mentally and physically challenged local athletes. Last Saturday, the Miracle League of San Diego opened it fall season at San Dieguito County Park. On hand to welcome the league’s 10 competing teams was the San Diego Padres’ Friar mascot who supplied numerous high-fives and the ceremonial first pitch.

Miracle League play is unique in that during each game, every child is given the chance to hit the ball and score a run and every game ends in a tie. Team participants are assigned volunteer buddies who provide encouragement and assist with hitting and running the bases. Teams play on Southern California’s first ADA accessible ball field.

The Miracle League’s fall season runs every Saturday through Nov. 15, and features five games during the day. For more information go to
