More red-light cameras added

Red-light runners beware - four more camera systems designed to keep motorists in line at busy intersections went into operation in San Diego on Friday.

The new photo-enforcement safety equipment is now online on Camino del Rio North at Mission Center Road in Mission Valley; Mira Mesa Boulevard at Scranton Road in Sorrento Valley; El Camino Real at Del Mar Heights Road in the North City area; and 10th Avenue at F Street in the downtown East Village district, according to police.

The additional cameras bring the total number of intersections monitored photographically in the city to eight, SDPD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.

The devices, which take snapshots of violators’ vehicles from the front and back, are triggered by roadway sensors that activate when the traffic light turns red.

“A motorist who is caught in the intersection while the signal light is yellow will not be photographed,’’ Munoz said.

A stoplight-running violation carries a minimum penalty of $371.

For the first 30 days, red-light scofflaws at the newly equipped road crossings will receive warnings only, she said.

The other intersections monitored by the camera setups are A Street at 10th Avenue in the Core-Columbia district; Garnet Avenue at Mission Bay Drive in Pacific Beach; Grape Street at North Harbor Drive in the Harborview area, near Lindbergh Field; and Aero Drive at Murphy Canyon Road in Serra Mesa.
