North Shore names executive board for 2011 season
The North Shore Girls Softball League (NSGSL) recently announced its executive board for the 2011 season. Kent Zapata was named president, while Tom Joas will serve as vice president. Cathy Scheg was re-elected as treasurer and Alanna Jones will take on the position of secretary. Kelli Kaelber will act as player agent.
The past two years have been unprecedented in the 22-year history of the NSGSL, with its 12U all-star team in 2009 and its 10U all-star team in 2010 earning their way to the ASA Western Nationals Tournament, placing ninth and 13th respectively.
“Our players continue to impress and inspire us as they compete at the national level with leagues twice our size,” says Zapata. “These accomplishments speak to the high level of talent and commitment of our players, coaches, and families.”
According to Zapata, the vision of this year’s executive board is to continue that success by expanding players and coaches clinics, and providing a program to develop top softball players in San Diego. Last year, the program included a clinic coached by the staff and players of the UCLA Bruins softball team, which went on to capture the NCAA Championship in 2010. NSGSL and UCLA plan to offer the clinic again in the 2011 season.
Zapata says he encourages girls, age 5 to 14, to register for the 2011 recreational softball season, and that beginners to the sport are welcome. Online registration begins Nov. 1, at www.nsgsl.com.
“North Shore is committed to being player-centered, focusing on the enhancement of each girl’s positive self image,” says Zapata. “As part of this community, we encourage families to support our players as they develop skills and learn to work together as a team, while building self-esteem and character.”
NSGSL is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization providing recreational softball leagues to girls from the communities of Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Torrey Hills, Fairbanks Ranch, and Rancho Santa Fe.
