Parker strong in Olympiad

A number of local students from the Francis Parker middle and upper schools will advance to the 2009 California Science Olympiad competition on April 18 after performing well at a regional competition Feb. 7 at Rancho Bernardo High School.

Parker’s upper school team placed third in San Diego County among 57 teams and the middle school team placed sixth in the County among 71 teams.

Upper school science teacher Rose Hanscom has coached Parker teams since 1997 and teacher Christi Cole, a 1986 Parker alumna, led the middle school team.

Local students who placed in the competition are: Maddy Jennewein of Del Mar, ’10, fifth in Herpetology, seventh in Junkyard Challenge and 12th in Disease Detectives; Kevin Rodin of Del Mar, ’15, eighth in Wright Stuff; Jackie Lee of Rancho Santa Fe, ’09, second in Picture This; Devan Diwanji of Carmel Valley, ’11, first in Egg-O-Naut, fifth in Elevated Bridge.
