Philanthropy Spotlight: Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego Count

Share

Since 1961, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been connecting eager San Diego County kids with adult role models and mentors, helping the youths develop into happy, successful members of the community.

As part of the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the country, Big Brothers Big Sisters operates six programs serving youths ages 7 to 18, providing quality relationships for “Littles” in the community or in the schools.

The benefits of these programs include demonstrated reduction in the likelihood to use drugs and to skip school as well as increased confidence, social and academic development and improved family relations.

Operation Bigs, a program focusing on the needs of children of military families, was pioneered in San Diego. Having spread to other parts of the country, the San Diego program is being doubled in size to reach even more children. As a result, the demand for volunteers, civilian or military, is greater than ever.

As a nonprofit organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters runs solely on financial donations and the time of generous volunteers. These efforts are supported by a variety of local charity fundraisers and events.
