Three low-income students earned scholarships to Cal State San Marcos with help from Reality Changers, which runs after-school mentoring programs in Solana Beach and City Heights.

They and seven others from the Solana Beach site earned $1.3 million to attend top universities across the nation, and 30 more Reality Changers’ students earned another $1.7 million in scholarships from two chapters in City Heights.

Founded in 2001 by Executive Director Christopher Yanov, Reality Changers helps disadvantaged youth become first-generation college students. “Through tutoring, financial support and leadership training,” Yanov said recently, “students from 38 San Diego middle and high schools have turned their lives around to become college-bound leaders in our community.”

Professionals from San Diego Social Venture Partners attended the ceremony. The nonprofit organization recently chose to support Reality Changers for a three-year investment cycle. These Partners will share their expertise to make the organization better. Carmel Valley resident and lead partner Lenore Hawkins said, “Our team can help them serve 150 more kids on the waiting list.”
